Mission: OPGHC is an organization dedicated to advocacy and education to create a just society free of discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
Vision: it is our vision to create a community where everyone can live freely without fear of violence, where our identities, relationships and families are respected, in creating a safe Harbor for all humans to express themselves free of judgment.
OPGHC was started in a coffee shop in downtown Hoquiam, WA. There was a call to action and after several focus group meetings we found there was a need to start an organization to advocate for the local Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer (LGBTQ+) communities.
We decided to host Grays Harbor’s first ever PRIDE festival. The festival attracted over 2000 people. We heard from many people the impact of having the event had on them.
There was one particular story that caught our hearts. Two elderly gentelmen got up early and drove a few hours to attend the festival. They were overcome with tears of joy when they found that they could walk hand in hand on the streets of their hometown. They met in high school and moved away to find a place where they could be in love and accepted.
It was stories like these that we heard over and over again at the first PRIDE that kept the momentum to continue having the event.
We are honored that we get to work with such amazing people around the Harbor and look forward to growing even more.
